Well based on the trailers, I thought Ranchi Diaries will be one of those films, called ‘Real Cinema’. Basically after Satya, and then popularised by Anurag Kashyap, the trend in ‘Real Cinema’ has come, which when interpreted by some lesser known people means: Usage of a local dialect, on-site shooting, lot’s of cuss words, blood, and gore. So based on the trailer I was embracing myself for ‘real cinema’
but the first pleasant thing about the movie was that is was not that kind of cinema, it was more of a light-hearted take, a comedy of errors, and the biggest plus point of the movie was that it was just 90mins long. The central plot was just one bank robbery, there was no build up of characters, no explanation for their behavior beyond a single line saying ‘yeh to aisa hai’ . There is also nothing much dramatic in the central plot of bank robbery, like in ‘Bank Chor’ there no stretching of the scene also. Basically, the movie keeps things very simple, silly characters are just plain silly and behave predictably funny. Like the intelligence men, kept for the escape plan wandering off to learn driving.
The movie does not give big laughs, but at the same time does not bore you. There are some funny one-liners, which are easy to miss, but are a joy if caught, like one with ‘pani kaam pita hoga’. And the biggest or probably the funniest joke is that the movie begins with ” In memory of ” and then shows an old 1000 Rs note. Which I think would have made more impact if it was after the final scene of the movie.
Also digressing, there is one point I would like to make is about ‘multiplexes’ and by them I mean the genuine ones of brands like INOX, in spite of sale of just three tickets the movie was shown, not like the pretenders ‘City Pride’ which cancelled a Gangs of Wasseypur show because there were only 10 people queued for the tickets..  just imagine an empty theatre with three people for a movie, make you feel like a King! without any foursquare (<- these are the kind of jokes in the movie !)
All in all, if you really want to watch a movie this week, well there is no other option, no other movie has released this week which is worth watching, so best thing to do is, afternoon show, full AC, and for 90 mins in a theatre near you, go and watch the movie for 90 bucks, with the expectation you go when you go to watch a play at college fest.

The Breakdown

Story 50%
Acting 50%
AC 99%
Joke about old note 60%
Just like that 77%
