The Jason Statham Show: the meg

There is a reason that Jason Statham will never make it to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) nor the DC Universe, and the movie ‘The Meg’ showcases it perfectly. The reason is : Jason Statham is a super hero just because he is ‘Jason Statham’. He does not need a radioactive disaster or even alien origins to background his super-powers. He, himself is the sufficient reason to be a superhuman.  The movie is about a super shark, in one scene we are shown that the super shark drags a medium size boat and breaks it to pieces. In the next scene the same shark is dragging the caged damsel underwater, the crane roped to the cage is bent and is dragged along with the boat, and in such a scene what does Jason Statham do….. he jumps into the ocean, and ‘swims’ towards the shark! So much so that Rainn Wilson (Billionaire Jack in the movie) shrieks out a ‘Wow’ with the audience. Such audacity is beyond any superhero!

By now you must have realized that the movie is about Jason Statham, so much so that I don’t even remember what his character is called in the movie. Additionally, the movie is about ‘China’. An interested academic can write a PhD thesis on ‘Tangential effects of Government Policy on Market Economics’. China, currently the world’s biggest cinema market has a policy of allowing a limited number of ‘foreign’ films every year, usually acclaimed movies or blockbusters. The workaround this policy is to Chinify the film, which is, to include China in the movie. Use Chinese locations, Chinese actors, and wallah! we have a ‘Chinese’ film. Hence the supporting cast around Action Jason is, a Chinese scientist, his Chinese daughter aka ‘damsel’, and his Chinese granddaughter.

Usually in such monster movies the culprit is ‘Genetic Engineering’, but then, how can the benevolent Chinese scientist engage in such activity, hence thankfully the super shark is all natural. The size of the shark varies both on screen and in terms of units used. Initially we are in the SI system and suddenly we hear the FPS system operational, this could have confused the VFX team and may explain the varying sizes of the super shark, then again, this is no Challenger mission, hence let’s not fuss about it. Moreover I think the VFX team had a Ruby Rose fan, he (or she) has polished the initial visuals of the character Jaxx that you wonder if she real or pure animation, like the ones we see in game trailers. ruby rose actress in the meg

The only star of the movie is Jason Statham, his dry humor, and mindless action, with the usual countdown of disposable characters getting, disposed off. The climax is one to watch out for, it reminded me of Die Hard, ‘Simon Says’, just as we feel a lull in action, a even louder action sequence follows. Epic is when the harmless TV crew helicopters crash out of the blue. The science part in this sci-fi is low, and it is an out and out thrill ride. Highly enjoyable, fun and worth the time, pure action movie.

The biggest disappointment was that the movie was not released in 3D!!!

The Breakdown

Action JaSon 99%
Thrill 95%
Climax Scenes 95%
Not in 3D 80%
Just Like that 95%
