Meaning:

When it was  my time to learn the ways of the world, I was busy in the ways of love

When it was time to learn pragmatism, I was drowning in idealism

However it was not long before I learnt the ways of the world, because when the time came,

you taught me the ways of selfishness.

I wish, I never was such a good student of your ways,

then, I might have been able to guard the innocence of my soul,

I would have become infamous as an idiot, the fool, the intoxicated simpleton,

at least that would have saved my ears from your voice calling me, hard-hearted
